Love, Victor Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

2. Victor's Character Journey

It'd be remiss of this writer to reflect on all the things that made this show so engaging without mentioning the sole purpose for its existence. It sounds obvious when you say it out loud, but Victor's story carried Love, Victor to success. And no, I don't necessarily mean that in the obvious well-yeah-it's-about-him kind on way, I mean it as a small indication of how it remained the most consistently compelling narrative throughout the 10-episode season.

We've already looked at how Simon's story wasn't the most universal. Yes, it made for a great romcom, it was groundbreaking in terms of LGBTQ+ representation on the big-screen, and most important of all, a lot of people could relate to it - but Victor's story offers another look at the coming-out-experience; one that a lot of others can now relate to as well.

From his attempt to experience a relationship with Mia to the show's committed attempt to highlight how sexuality isn't always a straight line, Victor's character arc is an unapologetically real one. And the show is never better than it is when showcasing that. The exploration of how his standing as the 'reliable one' in the family ultimately puts him under pressure to remain in the closet is exquisite conflict that ultimately leads to some wonderful character moments. And, again, it just feels so undeniably real.
