Love, Victor Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs
3. The Supporting Cast
While Love, Victor is primarily about our titular character, there is a network of interesting characters surrounding him that complete the package pretty nicely. Yes, the 10 episode season does occasionally struggle when it comes to which stories to highlight, but it never fails to present its cast with opportunities to shine.
It's hard to say which story is more engaging. Is it the marriage struggles between Victor's parents? Is it Mia's inability to accept her father's new love interest? Or is it the lovable Felix's desire to woo bossy 'It Girl' Lake? While the first of those three does provide the show with some of its juiciest material, the reason that all three of them hold their own is down to the performances that each respective cast member offers up.
Ana Ortiz is exceptional as the guilt-ridden mother of Victor, Pilar and Adrian while James Martinez plays the reserved, conservative father very well. Rachel Naomi Hilson is wonderful as the enthusiastic and almost always likable Mia, making us root for her even more with each passing episode. Bebe Wood channels the charisma of Lake oh-so-well, balancing it with the subtly of the deeper character within, and her screen partner Anthony Turpel steals the show as the nerdy-but-committed best friend of Victor, Felix.
Though it would have been nice to see a little more of George Sear's Benji over the course of the season, his performance more than made up for his lack of screen-time, ensuring that we all felt (nearly) as drawn to him as Victor so clearly was.
