Maniac: 4 Ups And 3 Downs From Netflix’s Latest Original Series' Trailer

2. It Could Become Too Clichéd

One problem that Maniac could have is that there is a risk that some aspects of its plot could easily become slightly clichéd.

An evil scientist testing on unsuspecting volunteers is certainly a trope that many viewers would consider to be an overused one. Hopefully Maniac will focus more on the results of the tests the characters undergo and their subsequent character development, as opposed to the potentially overly evil motivations of Justin Theroux's character.

Another trope that the show could too heavily rely on is the relationship between Hill and Stone’s characters. The trailer implies that the series will focus heavily on this relationship and, in itself, there is nothing wrong with that. However, one thing that could prove to damage the series is focusing too closely on this relationship romantically, which may serve to force it into becoming a stereotypical romantic-comedy.

There is no doubt that the themes of a dark shady scientist and a romance between the pair will feature, but it would certainly be a shame for such a visionary and offbeat show to enter cliché territory.
