Marvel's Iron Fist: What Does The Ending Really Mean?

11. How Is Danny Even Still Powered?

The Defenders Iron Fist
Netflix/EW

The whole point of the show's take on the Iron Fist legend is that the student who proves themselves through skill and in a final battle with Shou-Lao the Undying will not only earn the power of the Iron Fist, but also the responsibilities. It's basically reimagined as a job interview for a boring role that comes with the power perk.

So when Danny abandons his position, it's odd that he retains his power. He basically steals it from K'Un-Lun, which is partly why Davos is so angry with him, and leaving K'Un-Lun isn't enough, as Iron Fists are allowed to travel to defeat the enemies of their homeland - what Danny does is different. He basically turns his back on his duty consciously.

Surely a dereliction of duty would be cause for his powers and sacred position to be revoked? There's nothing in the show that suggests that the only transfer of power mechanism between Iron Fists is death (though Davos' murderous intent might suggest it), but it seems odd he'd be able to leave and not suffer any other power failures when his powers are so inherently linked to his position.

And then there's the question of why the powers remain when K'Un-Lun is defeated. If the powers are so innately linked to preserving the place, its destruction should surely mean the powers disperse, as they have no object to defend. It's all very confusing, and frankly the show doesn't really delve into the lore enough.
