After the end of the sixth episode made the totally-not-predictable reveal that "Leslie" was in fact Jessica's mother Alisa, the seventh episode was almost entirely composed of flashbacks, and it sure was a doozy.

The episode explained exactly what happened to Alisa following the car accident that claimed her husband and son's lives, with Dr. Malus' cutting-edge genetic editing tech allowing her to be saved, albeit with a different face.

The most entertaining flashback sequence, however, took place 12 years ago, with college-age Jess and Trish becoming at odds as Trish's substance abuse - and her dubious music career- spiralled wildly out of control.

We also learned Jessica's middle-name - as in the comics, it's Campbell - and the origins of her iconic leather jacket, which she used her powers to steal while canoodling with her new boyfriend, Stirling.

Naturally Jessica's happiness wasn't meant to last, though, and after Alisa first broke out of the lab where she was being confined, she tracked down Jessica. After she helped out an unknowing Jessica with a certain tampon situation, she overheard that Stirling was apparently going to pimp Jessica out as "hired muscle" to settle a debt with a local gang.

Hearing this, Alisa subsequently freaked out, smashing Stirling's head against a brick wall numerous times, killing him instantly. Jess discovered his bloodied corpse moments later, sending her into a guilt spiral that set her on the grim path she's still on today.

When the flashbacks finally conclude, Jess sure isn't happy about everything she just learned, promptly smacking mother dearest across the room. It's by far the series' best episode, and though Alisa killing Jessica's boyfriend is a pretty contrived reveal, it filled in so much of their backstories that it's easy enough to roll with.
