Marvel's The Defenders: 8 Ways It Saved Iron Fist
2. A True Humbling
Before The Defenders could really go all in on making Danny a more relatable character, they made sure to give him a long overdue humbling at the hands of Luke Cage and knock him down a notch or two (with the intent of building him back up, of course.)
Cage calls attention to how much Danny inherently has going for him and the resources he has at his disposal, yet doesn't use them in an effective way and immaturely focuses on shortsighted goals, as opposed to using everything he's got to help people to the best of his ability.
In many ways, Luke can be seen as a mouthpiece for the great many fans who were upset with the way Danny was portrayed in Iron Fist, saying exactly what they wish they could say to the character. It's a cold hard dose of reality that Danny desperately needed.
It also helped to lay the groundwork for the famous friendship that Luke and Danny share in the comics by letting the latter learn a thing or two from the man who comes from a very different walk of life. And both character will likely be better off for it as the Netflix portion of the MCU moves forward, especially if Marvel plans to bring in a Heroes for Hire angle.
