Marvel's The Defenders Review: 5 Ups And 7 Downs

2. Matt's Arc

The Defenders Matt Murdock
Netflix

It's no great shock that the most developed character in The Defenders is Matt Murdock, since he's had far more screen time than any of his fellow heroes. It's also no great shock that Charlie Cox is once again superb, but both are points worth celebrating.

Matt was in a dark place after the events of Season 2, and The Defenders - which takes place a few months later - does excellent work in picking up those threads and continuing to pull at them.

We start with a depressed Matt who is out of the vigilante game, to a man who gets dragged back into the fight, and eventually steps up to be the leader this team and, more importantly, his city needs him to be, finding a level of acceptance in who he is.

Cox's little tics as the blind lawyer continue to be a marvel to watch, while he expertly sells the inner turmoil over doing what's right and his love for Elektra. He gets meaningful time with both of his key supporting players, is the best in the action sequences, and by the end it leaves you desperate for Daredevil Season 3.
