The Netflix Marvel Universe regularly gets dark, with Jessica Jones dealing in particularly heavy themes and Daredevil giving us some moments of real gore and violence, and yet - as one might expect from a series about Frank Castle - The Punisher outdoes them all.

More than any other series in this world it earns the R-rating, with a huge amount of violence and bloodshed. There's an extremely high body count, and a number of occasions where people are shot from close range, with a few instances that'll really make you squirm.

Pretty much every episode has at least one action sequence, some of which fare better than others. There's nothing at the level of Frank's prison brawl in Daredevil Season 2, but there is excitement and inventiveness to be found in the scenes nonetheless, like when Frank takes down his enemies in near-darkness. The brutality and violence levels might make you wince, but they're not just there for the sake for it, instead analysing the violent nature of these men and the ways (and whys) of using it.
