Marvel's Daredevil Season 2: 10 Ups And 2 Downs
4. Jon Bernthal IS The Punisher
The major addition to the cast for Season 2, the one that had fans salivating with excitement, was Jon Bernthal as The Punisher.
Frank Castle is an extremely popular comic-book character, but one never fully done justice on screen, either because of actor or story. Here, both are in place, and Bernthal steals the entire show.
His presence looms large over everything, and he's an incredibly imposing and intimidating figure. We saw Bernthal become increasingly violent and unstable in The Walking Dead, and he brings something similar to Daredevil. However, while he is a killing machine, he's certainly not insane, well aware of what he's doing, and why.
That brings added depth to the character, as does the tragic backstory of his family being murdered before his eyes, and although he's a murderer you still find yourself rooting for him. Unlike with Fisk last year, there's nothing that changes that point-of-view, no moment he goes too far and becomes unsympathetic; if anything, he becomes more sympathetic as the season moves along.
The Punisher is a ruthless, brutal killing machine. He's an anti-hero bordering on full-blown villainy, and could easily be painted as a monster. Daredevil doesn't shy away from showing that side of him, but it also peels back the layers to reveal the doting father, the grieving husband, the very real, human man with a heart, and Bernthal absolutely nails all of that.
