5. Lily In The Apartment
The ending of Friends, comparisons with whom have dogged HIMYM since its conception, had Ross and Rachel finally get together and Monica and Chandler move out of the apartment, with the final shot slowly panning over the source of ten years of action. HIMYM pulled a similar moment, albeit as a much smaller part of the bigger episode, with Lily alone in the flat gutted of all fixtures. While it's a nice nod to the older show, it works in its own right by visualising the finales theme of time passing. And again, Hannigan does wonders while wearing that white whale costume.
4. Barney Falls In Love
At first it looked like the finale was about to unravel all the development that had been gifted to Barney over the preceding five-or-so seasons, returning him to his womanising ways following his divorce. But in a character resolution that few would have seen coming, it turns out that's all build-up for his defining moment; becoming a father. Maybe because it was totally unexpected, maybe because of Neil Patrick Harris performance, his face and all the emotion it conveys filling the screen, but when Barney first holds Ellie is one of the episodes most heartwarming moments.
