How I Met Your Mother Ending: 10 Past Faults It Must Avoid

7. Remember What "How Your Mother Met Me" Accomplished

The 200th episode of HIMYM, "How Your Mother Met Me", was a stark contrast to the rest of the largely disappointing 9th season. No gimmicks, no absurd, broad sitcom humor that is rarely funny, none of that. It was simple, sweet and beautiful. It told a simple story. What was the mother doing this whole time? All the near-misses Ted has ever had with her, we finally got her side of it. What was she doing on the night of the St. Patrick's Day party in "No Tomorrow"? Covered. How about her time in Ted's failed architecture class, first seen partially in "The Leap"? Got it. It was a moving episode, anchored by the gifted Cristin Milioti, and even featured a return appearance from Mitch, otherwise known as The Naked Man. It reminded you of why you fell in love with the series in the first place. It had heart, humor and a sharp script. It was proof that all you need is a good story and good actors to make something beautiful. And that's all you need to have a successful series finale. Perhaps even more important than this, however, is to give Milioti as much time in the finale as possible to shine. She's a very entertaining actress, and worthy of the mother role, but as much as this final season has been about the wedding of Barney and Robin, the final hour of HIMYM needs as much Ted/mother goodness as you can cram in. Time is running out.
