How I Met Your Mother Ending: 10 Past Faults It Must Avoid

8. Leave The Pineapple Alone

In season one, HIMYM began a long-running mystery regarding a night Ted spent with a woman named Trudy, and an equally unknown pineapple. If the identity of the mother was the number one mystery in the series, the pineapple is absolutely number two. Fans have speculated for years about the truth regarding the pineapple, which was even referenced in an episode from this season. And while I normally don't agree with the logic of "the mystery is better", in this case, I think it's a very true statement. Ignoring for a moment the fact that Ted flat out states they never found out the truth regarding the pineapple, which negates any logical way to conclude the story, it serves no purpose at this point to uncover the secrets of the pineapple. Even when Trudy returned in season season three, the pineapple was once again seen, yet the truth remained obscured. It's logical to assume that any revelation about the pineapple will be a disappointment, and isn't it better to keep some hope alive? But there's another reason, perhaps the biggest reason, that the pineapple should stay locked away. The writers for HIMYM are a talented bunch. They've written hilarious moments in many classic episodes. But when it comes to solving a long-standing riddle? Not so much. Consider that, for nine years, the reality of what Barney did for a living was hidden. Always answered the same way, with a wry chuckle and one word. Please. It was intriguing, and added another layer of charm to the already brilliant character. This season finally revealed what Barney does for a living, and to say that it destroyed nine years of character development is an understatement. Do you really want to find out that the pineapple is something silly and contrived, or would you rather enjoy the speculation? Exactly.
