How I Met Your Mother Ending: 10 Past Faults It Must Avoid

6. Avoid The Returning Guest Star Game

Any show that builds a stable of guest stars will absolutely be tempted to use the finale as a way to bring back as many as possible. Seinfeld pulled this off in spades in its series finale. And on HIMYM, you have quite a few famous guest stars that have become just as memorable as the leads. Victoria, Brad, The Captain, Patrice, Ranjit, or my personal favorite, Abby, there's a huge roster of recurring guest stars from the HIMYM-verse. And a few of them have even already made some brief appearances in this final season. But one thing the series finale needs to avoid is becoming a big guest star parade, as some episodes have fallen victim to in the past. It's always fun to see the return of a former guest star. I mean, unless they're Stella or something. But in a finale of this magnitude, it's difficult to allow much that would take away from the key story. A running theme about the series finale is that it will involve the most amount of flashforwards and timeline jumping ever seen in an episode before, which does lend credibility to it becoming a guest star showdown. It's highly unlikely that any HIMYM fan tuning into "Last Forever" will do so to see one last pointless appearance from William Zabka. We all know the characters we want to see, so just give us a send off worthy of Ted, Barney, Robin, Marshall and Lily, and everything will be fine. Well, I mean, unless you want to bring Katy Perry back, which I'd be fine with.
