5. The Son Of Sam, David Berkowitz

Any serial killer buff worth their salt doesn't need an introduction to David Berkowitz aka the Son of Sam, who for a year from mid-1976 to mid-1977, terrorised New York with his random shooting sprees, which killed six people and wounded seven more.

The Son of Sam quickly made worldwide headlines, with his taunting letters to the police only further driving public intrigue. It was upon Berkowitz's capture, however, that he became an outright celebrity, with his outlandish explanation for the murders, that a dog possessed by a demon implored him to carry out the killings.

Berkowitz has been depicted on screen before, as played by Michael Badalucco in Spike Lee's 1999 movie Summer of Sam, though his appearance in Mindhunter should hopefully dig much deeper and train a greater focus on the man himself.
