4. Tenko Shimura: Origin

Damn! We all knew the terrifying Shigaraki must have been holding some childhood trauma, but no one was expecting something as brutal, frightening and heartbreaking as this. We've already taken a look at the second half of his origin, so let's talk about what came before.

This episode also takes place during Shigaraki's encounter with Re-Destro, but looks even further into the past, back when he went by the name Tenko Shimura. As a troubled kid with a skin condition and an abusive father, the sudden appearance of his decay quirk causes unspeakable tragedy for this future villain.

This article talked earlier about how scary and dark "Tomura Shigaraki: Origin" was, but this episode pushes even further than that. The scene that shows the young Tenko's quirk manifest, resulting in him accidentally killing his entire family, had the makings of a full-on horror sequence and gave a clear indication of how much damage the character has done and the trauma he suffers from.

The thought that Shigaraki once wanted to be a hero and his discovery about his relation to Nana Shimura (which fans already knew) were also huge revelations and helped to make the character all the more complex and three-dimensional. Therefore, this episode easily deserves this high spot.
