Netflix's Friends From College Review: 2 Ups And 4 Downs
1. Episode Four
If you think that singling out one episode means that others suck, you can congratulate yourself on being smarter than the characters - after all they're a bunch of Harvard graduates. It seems that episode four shows what this show could've been when given the right pace and space.
Ethan and Lisa are trying to have a baby through IVF. Obviously things don't work out they way they should. Through montages the show achieves the right tempo, but also gives the characters enough freedom to present their fears in a consistent, gradual way. This means that once the revelation about Ethan's doubts appears, it's after a good build-up and feels well timed.
While elsewhere the over-reliance on montages and monstrosities performed by the characters is evident, here it's actually OK to feel sad for them. In that one moment they get the viewer's compassion - probably the most positive emotion they're able to generate and sustain for the duration of a whole episode.
