Netflix's Gypsy Review: 2 Ups And 6 Downs
5. Uninteresting Characters
Apart from Dolly, there are just no likable, or interesting characters on the show. Even those edgy or troubled ones are just stereotypes brought to the screen by actors. Each character has just one trait and it's exploited almost to a fault.
For instance, Sidney sings in a band called Vagabond Hotel, while Alexis signs her short story "Untitled Roller-Coaster Story by Alexis Wright." It's hard to be more bland than this.
Then there's Jean's husband, Michael, who's just too perfect. When he's being seduced by his secretary, Alexis, he suddenly starts a long tirade about Jean and how things used to be between them in the past. When Jean starts to change, he still loves and accepts her. Even when she doesn't want to give him the password to her phone, he doesn't bug her about it too much. Instead of being complicated, he's a convenient character, who just doesn't get in the way of the story.
