Netflix's Gypsy Review: 2 Ups And 6 Downs
4. The Headshots
Every time something "emotional" happens, the show immediately reverts to this basic cinematographic technique. What's more, when one person is speaking to another the face of the hearer is sometimes on the screen for a whole minute. The actors seem to be confused by that as much as the viewer, as their faces are filled with just one emotion - said confusion.
As the main character on the show, Watts is more subject to this than anyone. She's almost forced to express the same mix of sadness and uncertainty, while trying to contain herself. In every episode. Trying to be mysterious, yet also give small hints of strong emotions boiling inside is an almost impossible task. She's freed from that at the end of the last episode, where she cracks a triumphant smile.
