Everyone who grew up in the eighties might already be familiar with Voltron, but only a few know about the attempts that have been made to bring the characters and universe back for new audiences. These include its step in 3D animation with Voltron: The Third Dimension in 1998 and another reboot in 2011 with Voltron Force. But while the studios behind these reboots did try to bring something new to this familiar property, they haven't succeeded as much as the Netflix show.

From the first hour long episode, we get a good idea on just how dark the story progresses as we see just how much of a threat the Galra Empire is when our heroes encounter them between various planets. The full force of the antagonist runs throughout the series and with Emperor Zarkan destroying the life forces from multiple planets in order to create dark magic, their presence constantly grows to create interesting story lines that will surely keep anyone engaged.

But despite the darker take on the source material, they also respect the adventurous tone of the original series and know how to use the age of the heroes to keep things fun while offering mature subjects. From working as a team to the loss of family to even some comedic feuds between key characters, the writers know how to hit different levels of maturity to appeal to children while also hitting heartstrings that adults would connect with. Considering this series was from the studio behind Avatar: The Legend of Korra, it's no surprise to see similarities with the journey the main characters go through.
