Netflix Trese: Every Supernatural Creature Explained
8. Diwata And Elemental Spirits
Most likened to the Fae or Fairfolk of European mythology, but with roots in pre-colonial animistic beliefs, the diwata and elemental spirits are usually seen as beautiful beings who are largely benevolent to humanity.
They are often equated with anito - spirits and gods of nature and specific jobs and patronages that were worshipped in various ethnic groups across the islands before the eventual assimilation of Islam and Catholicism.
The diwata have evolved in image over time, their European fairy image becoming popular in modern day. One of the most famous diwata is Maria Makiling, who in the series is invoked by Trese's mother - the famous guardian of Mount Makiling and described as a benevolent, beautiful maiden.
Other spirits seen in Trese are the wind people, Hannah and Ammie, who come from the Habagat and Amihan tribes - the southwest and northeast winds respectively, as well as a woman in the council who isn't named, but is clearly a very powerful leader who has control over wind herself.
She's a steadfast ally to Anton Trese, similar to how Hannah and Ammie help Alexandra Trese in the future.
