The more well-known of the two is the Kapre, a dark, hairy giant about 7 to 10 feet tall that sits in Balete trees and smokes a giant cigar. If you treat them respectfully, they'll leave you be, and if you strike up a friendship with them or they fall in love with you, you'll be blessed throughout life.

Kapre are sometimes described as having red eyes, and one can see the light or smoke of their giant cigars in the trees at night. They're also known to be tricksters, confusing your path and making it difficult for you to find your way home.

The Higante, much bigger than the Kapre, is the Filipino interpretation of a giant. There aren't many specific tales attributed to one kind of giant, apart from the one-eyed Bungisngis, but certain stories speak of specific giants. From the motherly and kindly Sibbarayungan to the benevolent Gisurab, both from Isneg folklore, to strongman folk hero Bernardo Carpio, who's said to cause earthquakes.
