Netflix Trese: Every Supernatural Creature Explained
6. Siyokoy And Sirena
Mermaids in the Philippines are often divided into two subcategories. The more prominent when it comes to talk about monsters is the Siyokoy - easily distinguished for looking pretty much like the Creature from the Black Lagoon, or the fish man from the Shape of Water.
Siyokoy are often described as more fish-like, with gills and scales, but with human shape, sometimes described as having tentacles. Some versions also describe them as having sharp teeth.
The Sirena are the more human-like and attractive counterparts of the Siyokoy, resembling the typical mermaid with the beautiful features of a maiden with the top half of a human with a long fish tail.
They're no less monstrous, however, known for tricking, seducing, or hypnotising people and dragging them into the water to drown. Some mention their beautiful singing voice, much like the mythical siren, luring humans out to sea.
In the Trese series, mermaid bones are mentioned as part of a spell to sacrifice the White Lady ghost, and Siyokoy are seen as part of Anton Trese's supernatural council. In the comic, some Siyokoy attack humans during the annual monsoon floods that plague Metro Manila.
