Netflix's The Order: 12 Questions That Must Be Answered In Season 2
9. What Really Happened To Chloe And Sophia?
"Some day we'll understand" is the promise made by Chloe Morton's gravestone. Season 1 of The Order fails to make good on this promise, leaving the specifics of Chloe's death largely unexplained. In fact, the series has yet to explain the very nature of her relationship with Edward Coventry other than the fact that they conceived Jack.
The series does explain a few things. When Pete contacts Chloe on the Necrophone, her proclamation of longing for Edward indicates that the two shared a strong romantic bond. This tryst must have ended prior to Jack's birth, given that Edward sincerely believes Maddox to be his only son.
On the other hand, Edward must have been in contact with Chloe after Jack's conception. Otherwise, Jack and Pete could not blame Edward for Chloe's suicide, which could only have occurred after Jack was born. More specifically, her suicide likely took place while Jack was an infant. This is suggested by Jack's remark to Alyssa that Pete was the only family he's ever had. If he's not simply being melodramatic, the implication is that Chloe died while Jack was still too young to remember her.
Chloe's death is important enough to warrant further explanation. It sent Jack on a mission to join the Order. Pete gave his life in an attempt to avenge her. If Season 2 fails to explore the details of her passing, this pivotal event will remain little more than an easy plot device. It's a strangely textbook example of fridging for a show that frequently references gender politics.
Sophia Coventry's death is similarly mysterious, although appears to be magic-related. Renee first mentions Sophia's death when discussing Edward's magical ambitions, and Sophia tells Pete through the Necrophone that her life was a sacrifice Edward had to make. Was her death related to his search for the Vade Maecum Infernal? Hopefully, Season 2 will provide the answer.
