New Girl: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best
4. Season One
New Girl got off to a very confident start with its first season, despite it suffering from many of the same flaws as most sitcoms. The pilot, for example, introduces Coach as a main character, only to have him replaced by Winston in the very next episode.
Also, the core group - most notably Winston and Cece - act very differently here than they would later on, and Jess' quirkiness is ultimately overshadowed by the show's wider ensemble.
These are big problems no modern sitcom is safe from, and through the power of the humour and breakout cast, the season is able to overcome its biggest flaws with a collection of episodes that find a striking balance between total comedy and more relatable adult drama.
Amongst its tight writing, the season introduces the will-they-won't-they of Nick and Jess and the show's frequent taste for off-setting the sitcom formula with sparks of surprisingly acute dramatic twists. It's far from spotless, but it's also a remarkable start to a show already striving for its full potential.
