Like The X-Files, shows such as Buffy, Angel, and early seasons of Fringe mixed in mythology episodes (told in a serial style) with standalone outings generally referred to (thanks to the Chris Carter created series) as Monster of the Week episodes. These are the episodes that gave fans the Fluke man, Donnie Pfaster, and Eugene Victor Tooms, among others. In any revival, more of these will be necessary. Serial shows are hit and miss these days outside of HBO and AMC; it's always a gamble as to whether viewers have the attention span for an on-going story. Fringe, the heir-apparent to The X-Files during its five year run on Fox, never really caught on despite being a fantastic sci-fi procedural (even without the aliens, it tied in heavily, going so far as to reference the X-Files as part of its world in one episode). A large part of that was a mythology that many found difficult to follow. Any X-Files revival needs to have some brilliant MOTW episodes to really catch on with a new generation of fans.
