Obi-Wan Kenobi Part III Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs
2. Darth Vader's Return
In the opening moments of Part III, we get to see something we've never really seen before: Darth Vader, free from the bacta tank keeping him alive, is pieced together to reveal the monstrous figure we all know and love.
It's a stunning and haunting sequence, revealing Vader as more robot than man before his scarred face is covered by his iconic helmet, and his breathing cuts through the darkness.
Physically portrayed by Hayden Christensen and voiced by the great James Earl Jones (who, at 91, has lost none of his menace), Vader's role in Part III is much more physical than we've ever seen before. When he finally shows himself to Obi-Wan, he kills several villagers by snapping their necks in order to draw him out.
Wasting no time to show us how Vader earned such a fierce reputation, the episode paints him as a relentless monster, alive without a shred of the good man he once was. As he tells Obi-Wan: "I am what you made me." Anakin is gone.
This brutally violent reunion then leads to the episode's crowning achievement...
