Obi-Wan Kenobi Part III Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs
1. The Stunning Third Act
Having laid waste to a defenceless village and cornered his former master into a duel, Darth Vader ignites his lightsaber and unleashes the full force of his power, effortlessly beating Obi-Wan down and then - in a twisted moment of poetic revenge - burns him in a pit of fire.
Recalling their last confrontation on Mustafar, Obi-Wan and Vader's rematch works as a startling reminder of how powerful the Sith Lord has become, and how weak Obi-Wan has become after years cut-off from the Force.
Shrouded in darkness save for their lightsabers, the fight is quick and brutal, and Deborah Chow's direction captures every ounce of Obi-Wan's fear and heartbreak as his old friend promises him pain. When Obi-Wan burns, it's so dark and unexpected that for a heartbeat it feels like he's truly doomed.
Gripping and sad, the third and final act of Part III is utterly flawless, not just as a brilliantly choreographed rematch between two bitter rivals who are far removed from the men they once were, but also as an affecting piece of storytelling. Vader has never appeared this strong before, and his old master has never been so hurt.
How Obi-Wan comes back from this is a mystery.
