Before Helen and Omar, Del was the face of the cartel in the eyes of the Byrdes and audiences alike. Played with a searing intensity from Esai Morales, Del is the man who was the point of contact for Marty during his initial laundering.

Del makes an instant impression as he murders everyone at Marty's office including his partner. Just before he executes Marty himself, he is enticed by Marty's silver tongue that talks himself out of being killed. It is the best scene in the pilot and the stress is heighted by Del's seemingly emotionless visage.

Del keeps a close eye on Marty throughout the first season as his patience with the Byrdes wears as time goes on, creating a sense of mounting pressure. Del has one of the best death scenes in the whole show as he accompanies Marty to the Snell ranch to work out a beneficial deal for them all. He insults Darlene arrogantly which proves to be a bad idea as Darlene proceeds to remove his face with a shotgun blast.
