Ozark Season 3: 6 Ups & 2 Downs
7. Downs: Ruth's Decision To Quit And Work For Darlene
The second down is Ruth quitting and joining Darlene because Wendy betrayed Ben. First, I think Wendy and Marty confessed to it too soon and have both lied their way through tougher situations. Ruth heard Ben tell her himself that he crossed Helen so it shouldn't be out of the question she would have him killed.
Also, even though she was in love with Ben, Ruth saw firsthand how much his actions endangered their operation. For the argument to lead to her quitting and eventually going to Darlene's side seemed a bit extreme, but at least it's supported by some foreshadowing and big plot points and not just a throwaway idea.
Ruth knows how crazy Darlene is and doesn't seem to trust her, but as she did with Wyatt, Darlene swooped in and saved Ruth in her time of need and also played to her lack of a maternal figure growing up.
As next season starts, viewers will see how committed Ruth is to her new alliance and with her knowing so much about the Byrde's operation she is definitely not one to cross, but this alliance seems more like a temporary plot point than a long standing partnership.
