Parks & Recreation: 10 Hidden Jokes You Totally Missed
1. The Unity Quilt
In the sixth episode of Parks and Rec's excellent fifth season, Leslie is introduced to Ben's parents at their engagement party. Tensions are immediately high when Ben's father (played by Jonathan Banks) brings his much younger girlfriend and announces that she is pregnant. While the messy Wyatt clan continue to bicker and fight, Leslie, in true Knope fashion, unveils her "Unity Quilt".
The Unity Quilt is a project that Leslie had been preemptively working on to prevent too much discord between Ben's divorced mother and father. Many different images and icons have been sewn onto the quilt by Leslie to represent all the things that unite the Wyatt family.
While the quilt is mostly referenced to and only shown on screen in full a few times, if you look closely, you'll catch a few sight gags in the quilt's patches. Even though it is meant to be aimed at uniting the Wyatt family, Leslie includes a patch with an image of waffles on it. We can infer that Leslie simply assumes that waffles can unite anyone, which is a subtle hint at Leslie's storied love affair with breakfast food.
She also includes a Li'l Sebastian patch, which is another reference to the established fact that everyone loves Li'l Sebastian. As well as this, there is a map of Pawnee on one square which is funny considering the Wyatts are from Minnesota.
The quilt is a funny yet subtle bit of characterisation for Leslie, who assumes that everyone is as obsessed with Pawnee as she is.
