Peaky Blinders: 10 Best Characters Who Appeared After Season One
4. Jessie Eden
Played by Charlie Murphy, the character of Jessie Eden made her first appearance in season four of Peaky Blinders. Just like Oswald Mosley, Jessie Eden is also based on a real life figure.
In both the show and real life, Jessie was a union leader and communist activist. In Peaky Blinders, she's shown to lead Tommy's female factory workers into a strike against their working conditions, low pay, and lack of holiday. She even recruits Linda, Polly, Esme, and Lizzie to join her efforts.
Peaky Blinders certainly isn't short of strong female characters, yet it was still refreshing to see Jessie stand up to Tommy and champion the female workers' rights - particularly when you take into account just how bold and brave of a move this would have been for the real life Jessie Eden in the 1920s. The character pays homage to a real life icon we may otherwise never have heard of.
Unfortunately, Jessie's role was significantly reduced in season five. We see her protesting outside of Oswald's speech towards the end of the season but besides her brief run in with Tommy, she's absent from the rest of the season.
Admittedly, perhaps Jessie's sole purpose was simply to highlight the women's rights movement of the 1920s and this was achieved in season four but the writing on Peaky Blinders is so strong that we doubt Jessie would be left around for no reason. Perhaps she'll be a key element of taking down Oswald Mosley and the fascists in season six.
