'Are you going to shoot him because this man is evil'?

How could the best supporting character not be Alfie Solomons. They tried to kill him off in the series and had to renege on it in the next season, such was his popularity.

Tom Hardy, like Adrien Brody, is a bonafide movie star and his reason for playing a supporting role in a huge BBC drama comes down to his friendship with creator Steven Knight. Well, we're all glad that it came about because we ended up with the brilliant King of Camden, Alfie Solomons.

He steals every scene he is in with his prophetic wisdom and underlying savagery. Alfie's meetings with Tommy are always the best scene in any episode, and the pair have a respect and a bond that still manages to endure in spite of several double-crosses and an assassination attempt.

The truth is that Alfie is a perfect version of Tommy, he is intelligent, undoubtedly cunning, and has the same ability to see the truth of people in an instant. What he has that Tommy doesn't have, however, is an exit plan.

Alfie was always trying to retire to Margate and get out of Camden, knowing that the fight has to end at some point. Tommy can't do that because of his rapidly increasing mental illness and visions of Grace, so where Tommy admittedly will keep going until he dies, Alfie lets it all go and moves on.

Where the pair end up will be fascinating to see.
