Ah the Flat. It's been the base point for every episode of Peep Show, and the birthplace of many of the show's greatest moments. The flat in itself is as much a character as any of those mentioned in the previous post. Just as in the last episode of 'Friends' a slow pan swept over the emptiness of Monica's apartment, a place we had known for over 10 years, so too will we need to say goodbye to Mark and Jez's South London pad. The idea of two very grown and almost middle aged men sharing a flat together is something that usually only exists in sitcoms, and since Peep Show is very much based in reality it's only a matter of time before we say goodbye to the flat. In Series 7 one of the main focus points was Jeremy moving out so that Dobbie could move in, this quickly fell apart but it felt like a natural progression for both characters. Mark needed the stability of having his girlfriend living with him and Jeremy needed to learn to stand on his own two feet. It will be sad to see the two leave what has become an iconic part of the show. The idea of Mark and Jez living together and the dichotomy it represents was one of the core values of the show. These two people should not be able to live together. They are both barely functional adults, but put them in a co-habitation situation and suddenly they ALMOST look like regular members of society. They balance each other out in a yin-yang sort of way, and if the flat is to go, it not only represents the real physical separation of the two, but also the breaking up of their room mate dynamic. A dynamic which is at the heart of the show.
