Pennyworth Trailer Reactions: 5 Ups & 1 Down
2. Laying The Groundwork
When Gotham first hit our screens back in 2014, we all knew how it was going to end. Heck, even when the producers told us that they couldn't tackle Batman, we still knew how it was going to end. Pennyworth, however, is a little more complicated than that.
This isn't a Gotham City prequel story in which a handful of characters are all in the same place at the same time. Furthermore, it isn't building towards the famous Batman story because, unlike Gotham, it's not telling that story again. Pennyworth is the story.
That being said, it was a rather pleasant surprise to see old Alfie crossing paths with Bruce Wayne's father, Thomas, in the trailer. While that doesn't necessarily mean that it's destined to happen in the first episode, it does prove that the pair's lives are indeed destined to intertwine throughout the season - especially as actor Ben Aldridge (who portrays Thomas Wayne) is a series regular - and, as a result, will form one of the comics' most underdeveloped friendships.
Fans of the comics are well aware of the fact that Alfred was incredibly good friends with Bruce's parents and yet they have rarely been given the chance to actually see them interact. Now, we'll all finally get to witness how Thomas and Alfred came into each others' lives in a meeting that will undoubtedly lay the groundwork for the days of the Dark Knight in Gotham City.
