3. Jesse Fights God One On One (Vol. 7)
For a story in which a man receives the power of the Voice of God it is essential to at some point include the moment when the two forces - man and deity - finally come to blows and as much as depicting God as a nasty, cheating, no good son of a bitch will piss some people off (especially in the US) it is absolutely integral to the story and would be foolish to forget. Of course Jesse has his ass handed to him by his creator who switches from sweetness and light one minute to Hell fire and brimstone the next but it is the message he is given alongside the beating that is most important - "Accept me as your saviour or be damned!!" - which implies that Jesse needs to fall in line and give up his pursuit of the man upstairs or else. It's a pretty scary thought and for many of us would be sufficient to call it a day but this moment shows us exactly what Jesse is made of and sets up the final 2 volumes nicely. Can you imagine this as an end of season pay off?
