Preacher Season 3: 5 Ups And 1 Down From 'The Tombs'
4. Young Jesse
As noted here, the flashbacks in the current season of Preacher have been somewhat divisive. Why? Primarily because they take up too much time, but also because the majority of them have centred around Marie L'Angelle doing something incredibly villainous. Okay, we get it - she's the most evil woman to ever walk the face of the earth, so do we really need to keep seeing it?
That being said, the Jesse Custer-centric flashbacks are working incredibly well. In contrast to the Marie L'Angelle sequences, these flashbacks work because we have an emotional connection to the character. Moreover, they're full of necessary information, because we get to see firsthand that, in spite of what people like Madame Boyd have to say, Jesse isn't as bad as people think. He was a conflicted kid who did what he had to to survive - and to protect those he cared about. Actor Will Kindrachuk, who plays the young iteration of Jesse, delivers an absolutely superb performance, and is quickly becoming one of this season's most valuable assets.
