From The Get Down to Soundtrack, Netflix has a long history of trying to make prestige musical dramas happen and then cancelling them. The Eddy could be the series that finally delivers on their desires.

Certainly this story of a jazz pianist running a struggling club will benefit from the knowledge and clout of a man who knows that whole bag of tricks pretty well: Oscar-winning La La Land director Damien Chazelle.

In fact, its marketing has leant heavily on the pedigree of the creative talent involved. And you can see why. The eight-part miniseries was written and created by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, His Dark Materials), developed and directed by Chazelle and Alan Poul (Tales Of The City), and has original music from Glen Ballard (whose writing credits vary from Michael Jackson's Bad to Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill).

Set in a vibrant, multi-cultural part of Paris, Moonlight's Andre Holland heads the cast as a once successful New York jazz musician, alongside A Prophet's Tahar Rahim as his business partner with some shady connections and dark secrets, and Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) as his rebellious teenage daughter.

With its diverse cast and multi-lingual setting, The Eddy looks like part of Netflix's strategy to embrace a wide international audience and that could mean that it has the making of a worldwide success.
