Predicting Netflix's Next 10 Smash Hit Shows
6. Inventing Anna
Released: Late 2020/Early 2021
Netflix loves a true crime story, while the world in which Parasite is the runaway big screen hit also loves a story of making criminals sympathetic because they're ordinary people scamming the vulgarly mega-rich. That audience and the true story of Anna Sorokin (AKA Anna Delvey) are a match made in heaven.
Essentially an Instagram Anastasia, Sorokin was the daughter of a truck driver in a working-class town outside Moscow who nevertheless managed to con her way into New York high society by posing as a German trust fund heiress and social media it girl.
The Netflix series about her comes from Shonda Rhimes, whose past series Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder have pulled in big streaming audiences on Netflix even though they were originally made for ABC, and is just one of eight shows in the contract between the uber-producer and the streaming service.
Inventing Anna is adapted from a New York Magazine article by Jessica Pressler (whose work was also the source for the movie Hustlers) and stars Anna Chlumsky (Veep) as a journalist investigating Anna, played by Ozark star Julia Garner. It sounds like Catch Me If You Can for the Hustlers generation. And that sounds like a definite crowdpleaser.
