3. Season 1
Where it all started! Dexter takes a couple of episodes to settle into itself - the pilot in particular seems so in love with its serial-killer-but-good-guy concept that we see more than the usual amount of blood and guts and murder, possibly setting up expectations that later will not be met.
Beyond that though, this is a pretty darn good season of television. The show introduces a cast of quirky and likeable supporting roles, an intriguing murder-mystery and all this narrated by the morbidly wry humour of Dexter Morgan. Dexter’s first season is the only season that is actually based on its corresponding novel; Darkly Dreaming Dexter, with the remainder of the series branching away from the plot of the books.
The central plot of the season involves the hunt for a serial killer known as The Ice Truck Killer, and it is sufficiently engaging and twisting to keep us entertained. However, the true joy of season 1 is getting acquainted with our wonderful cast.
