Ranking All Main Characters From Boardwalk Empire
19. Eddie Kessler
Treat your employees with respect, and you shall get devotion in return. The same cannot be said of Nucky and Eddie's relationship, as throughout the four season run, Eddie appears to be nothing more than a nuisance. Yet he is a proud character who treats Nucky Thompson with the utmost respect at every turn.
Immediately there is a great comedic duo between Nucky and his butler-chauffeur-bodyguard. Eddie's earnest devotion, sincerity and servitude to Nucky is repeatedly a cause of laughs, and catching Steve Buscemi react with an annoyed expression each time endears their relationship further.
Of all the gunslingers and bootleggers Nucky employed, none were as devoted to him as Eddie and it came as a great concern when in the third season he caught a bullet for his boss. It was the first time viewers got to see Nucky show genuine concern for his chauffeur, and while he made it through to the fourth season their dynamic was changed from then on. Nucky's respect for a man who would take a bullet for him grew over time.
Sadly though, Eddie took his own life midway through the fourth season; ashamed at his betrayal when Bureau agents obtained and tortured him for some time on the details of Nucky's operation. It was a real sad moment to see Kessler go, and further drove the point that those committed to Nucky were slowly moving away from him.
