Ranking All Main Characters From Boardwalk Empire
18. Mickey Doyle
You'd be forgiven for forgetting a character like Mickey Doyle. He was never really in the thick of any of the show's major plots; always circling the drain of the narrative and serving as almost a prop for locations and plot devices.
Alright! That's not entirely true. The first season did see Mickey hover somewhere between ally and enemy to Nucky Thompson, as his uneasy partnering up with the D'Allesio Brothers should have been a final nail in the coffin. As the series progressed, Mickey became less relevant to the story, but a familiar presence in the Bootlegging warehouses and speakeasy's. Despite being something of an irritating comedic character, he was at times the more logical thinker and offered sound logic to Nucky's business ventures.
"How are you still alive?" is a question asked to Mickey midway through the series' run, and throughout viewers had to ask themselves that same question. The fifth season marked the end of the show, and the end of Mickey Doyle as he was callously murdered by Luciano during a standoff.
Doyle's death in the series was shocking for two reasons - the first being a sheer unexpected surprise on the screen, and the second that Mickey was irritating, but he didn't deserve what he got.
