Ranking Apple TV+'s Top 10 Best Original Series
2. Trying
Trying belonged on the BBC. At least, it would have done in days gone by. Still though, to see it on Apple TV+ was a bit of a surprise because it didn't seem to fit in with their available programming at the time.
Apple seemed more interested in gritty real-world/fantasy drama than they did in a sweet comedy, but those assumptions were wrong and they released Trying onto their platform with a fair amount of marketing behind it.
After seeing the show, the prevailing thought was "Wow! What an unexpected series it is!"
Trying had everything that a great comedy-drama should have. Witty dialogue, a great narrative, tremendous performances, and the series tackled a subject matter that for so many can come close to the bone. Namely the struggle of not being able to conceive and the decision to adopt a child.
Watching Jason (Rafe Spall) and Nikki (Esther Smith) go through the stages of wanting a child only to find out they couldn't have one, is something straight out of a heavy drama. However, without making light of that difficult situation, Trying managed to bring together a show that told the humour and the bittersweet nature of the process of adoption that never once fell into melodrama.
The second season has been ordered by Apple, and so many are very much looking forward to seeing how Jason and Nikki are when we catch back up with them.
