17. Helping Hand

Lucky 13 Love Death Robots
Netflix

Feeling like a cut scene from Gravity, Helping Hand is the story of a lone astronaut stranded in space who must do whatever she can to survive before she runs out of oxygen. Despite some nice visuals, Helping Hand fails to be as engaging or subversive as other shorts in the series, and instead revolves around the decision that is taken by the astronaut to remove her appendage.

An extra few minutes could've been beneficial to the 10 minute short to heighten the tension and strengthen the character development as much as possible. As it stands, we are merely watching the series of events unfold in front of us with little alignment or care as to the outcome. The climax is sudden and feels more like the start of a building conflict, not the end of one.

As a result, Helping Hand ends up being an example of a missed opportunity to do more.
