Ranking Every Major Performance In Carnival Row
4. Karla Crome (Tourmaline Larou)
Karla Crome’s Tourmaline Larou is only a supporting character, but she steals practically every scene she’s in. Even though she only has a minor impact on the story, there to give Vignette Stonemoss a connection to Carnival Row, Crome’s performance makes her a major and memorable part of the ensemble.
Tourmaline has the same rough edged, no bull attitude of Crome’s character in Misfits, but there’s more nuance here. We see tenderness with Vignette and disdain with Philo, all balanced with an easy going charisma.
While Vignette is bogged down in her own, very personal story, it’s Tourmaline left representing the lives of the Critch in the Burge. Considering the deeper themes of the show, this humanisation of the ‘others’ is a crucial role.
The kiss between Tourmaline and Cara Delevingne’s Vignette is slightly strange and goes nowhere quickly, but Crome herself doesn’t put a step wrong.
The ending leaves her involvement in season two a little up in the air (or rather, shot down to earth), but hopefully she’ll stick around. It appears there’ll be an even greater focus on the Critch next time, so Tourmaline will be a welcome addition to that storyline.
