Ranking Every MCU TV Show From Worst To Best
9. The Defenders
The Defenders was supposed to be the television equivalent of the first Avengers film, uniting all of the primary characters on screen for the first time and pitting them against an ungodly threat that they can only take down together.
Though there were only two years of build as opposed to the Avengers four, audiences had sixty five episodes (two seasons of Daredevil and one apiece of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist) to become familar with and invested in the Defenders' leading foursome. The decision to spend several episodes reintroducing them was therefore a baffling one. As a result, it isn't until the end of the third episode that they are all actually seen together, leaving just five (one of which was a bottle episode in what should've been a lean eight) for them to combat the Hand.
The mystical clan were largely uninspiring in both Daredevil and Iron Fist and the third time certainly wasn't the charm. The casting of Sigourney Weaver as one of their five leaders was something of a letdown seeing how little she was given to do, whilst her counterparts (even the fan favourite Madame Gao) were mostly window dressing
The Defenders is redeemed somewhat by the fact that it has some terrific action sequences and there is a novelty to be had in seeing a second group of renowned Marvel characters duking it out together. It’s hard to look past its wasted potential though.
