When Starlight was young, long before her days in the Seven, she attended bible camps and took part in the Capes for Christ project. This was where she met her first boyfriend, Drummer Boy, and she also got to know the supe known as Gecko.
While working for Vought in their lab rather than as one of their supes, the character used his regeneration ability not for good, but to make money on the side. Essentially reduced to prostitution, Gecko literally sold his body, allowing customers to chop off his limbs and keep them.
He was blackmailed by Starlight into getting her a sample of Compound V, and ultimately had no choice but to betray Vought, though it seems that he was somewhat betrayed by them. His parents allowed Vought to pump Compound V into his body to make him a superhero, and though he was gifted an ability that could have made him a great supe, he was instead kept in a mundane job on the 67th floor of Seven Tower.
