Ranking The Best Classic Top Gear Specials Worst To Best

1. Polar Special

Hands down the best of the specials. This might be some of the best TV ever made in history because this wasn't a 1000 mile cheap car challenge, this was about racing to the North Pole. Car vs Dogs.

Clarkson and May were in a heavily modified Toyota Hilux, and Richard Hammond (the fittest) with a dog sled team.

Now looking back, that Hilux is the greatest car ever featured on the Top Gear specials because it was just an unrelenting warrior. It went up against the harshest conditions on the planet and barely blinked as it just hammered away at the ice surrounding it.

Though the trio are split for most of this task, it featured them at their most real. Hammond's patience wore very thin with Matty McNair, his dog sled commander, at one point making a threat with a shovel.

Whereas Jermey and May actively engaged in rows over tents and the treatment of their car. This was the trio at their most vulnerable and scared, yet through it all, all of them (including McNair) should be commended for the journey, as it made for some truly epic TV.

There were just no weaknesses here and the episode included a cameo from Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who gave the boys a pep talk before they set off, mostly by showing them the parts of his hand that had been amputated due to frostbite.

Though there were fun moments here too, with Jeremy and James drinking gin as they drove across the wilderness (because they're technically not beholden to drink driving laws), Richard learning to ski, and Jeremy being pushed into icy water by a former member of the SAS.
