Putting the world's most-watched entertainment show in a wartorn country gave the episode an edge that felt uncomfortable in many ways. Though in the end much of their work does help to change opinion on places like Iraq, where it becomes all too clear that the general population are just normal people who want to go about their day.
For that, the usual childish antics of the show and its hosts, are to be commended. They showed us all a different side to the country, which is clearly very beautiful.
The cars themselves, sporty convertibles, really do shine in this one if not for the fact that the BMW is totally unreliable, yet the Fiat just keeps on going. Jeremy's Mazda aside, the other two bought the interesting cars and had totally different levels of success.
This might have been the first special where the scripting was a bit noticeable, especially where the trio are burka-clad in trying to sneak across Syria. Though this would become a far bigger issue in later specials, it is not too bad here and their journey showcases their surroundings as much as anything.
Their trip to find the baby Jesus and end up with a new Stig adds a comical side which is tongue in cheek, in particular Clarkson buying it a Nintendo DS because he doesn't know what myrrh is.
