Ranking The Best Classic Top Gear Specials Worst To Best
5. Vietnam Special
Swapping out the usual car orientated focus must have been a tough call, however, it all came together rather well in Vietnam.
The drastic shift in their usual mode of transport made the Vietnam special something special itself compared to the rest of the Top Gear oeuvre. The times where it worked best, no other special can claim to have been overtly better, and watching Jeremy try to ride his bike through a country that has appalling roads in some places is hilarious.
The cars weren't missed by most people, though I'm sure a few still would have preferred them. The race to get to Ha Long Bay was epic and featured some of their best witty banter back and forth because of the fact that they were on bikes.
It also debuted the idea of buying gifts for one another, Hammond's Gallion model was particularly amusing, along with May's sculpture which ended up in bits.
As for the bikes themselves, Hammond's Minsk bike was quickly identified as looking like one member's of the Taliban ride with AK47's on their backs. May had a Honda Super Cub, which had virtually no power to it. Whereas Clarkson had some kind of scooter called a Vespa that broke down a fair amount.
The highlights included Clarkson finally starting to like biking, right up until he came off of it, May falling into Ha Long Bay whilst trying to restart his modified Honda/raft, and Hammond's bike being painted pink by a random woman (after Clarkson and May gave her the spray paint).
Best Car (Bike): Well, Clarkson Won The Challenge, So Probably His Scooter.
