Ranking The Best Classic Top Gear Specials Worst To Best
7. Africa Special
From the moment Clarkson showed up in a BMW wearing double denim, this one was due to be a great ride out, and it was.
The Africa special featured some of the best moments Top Gear ever filmed abroad. For example, when the Ugandan soldiers help Clarkson out of a mud puddle by building him a temporary road, it might just be one of the best unexpected sequences in Top Gear history. To hear the whole film crew applaud them whilst Jeremy pays them for their effort is actually a wonderful sight to behold.
Though in-between the brilliant moments it can drag slightly and some things feel again forced, the episode rolls along well and has some of the best banter of any special to date. Seeing the state of the hotel they find themselves in because of Hammond's guidance is very funny, especially Jeremy's clear aversion to it.
The road near the end which keeps breaking their cars is another highlight, as we see a very real side to the presenters and their mechanical abilities.
The premise to find the source of the Nile was a masterstroke of whoever thought of it and the race at the end is actually very entertaining as you pick sides on who you want to find it first.
Best Car: Hammond's Subaru
